RESEARCH

Intergroup relations

We explore social identity in its social context; by which social situations group memberships, norms and institutionalized representations are activated, which cause intergroup behaviours. We are interested in how these possibilities of identification with groups are nourished by what kind of collective memories (history stories, moral examples), how these historical events are reframed in the light of their present state (collective victimhood, subjective threats). What kind of subjective values and norms play part in the frame of intergroup conflicts, how their use is changed, and how it can be changed.   Intergroup relation chances are limited in the extent how group members represent themselves, the other group, therefore the representational field of the intergroup relation.

Threatened identity

We are looking to threat in its objective states and subjective experience. In objectively threatened situations (prejudiced social-societal contexts, impossible social mobility, biologized group boundaries) threat is often not voiced by the members of minorities.  We are interested in the kind of coping strategies in use, how these strategies relate to identity choices, what kind of cognitive alternatives are allowed and how these dimensions influence intergroup situations. The perception of subjective threat not inevitably corresponds with a real threat in the present, often is embedded in the reconstruction of historical events, transmitted through dominant interpretative frames. Both threatening situations generate and maintain instability in identity construction, which causes frequent social comparison, through which a group tries to reinterpret its position in the social context.

Influence between social and individual processes

In this research area we examine, how dimensions considered as individual traits and characteristics, like self-esteem, empathical skills, self-reflection are in a mutual relationship with the social context. We assume the interaction patterns and cooperative and competitive strategies and the feedbacks of the others on them closely influence these dimensions.

Contents, situations, interventions bound to prejudice and its reduction

Which are the target groups of prejudice. Which are the social function of our representations of us and the other groups. How prejudice can be reduced, which social situations allow its short and long term reduction.
